The UK and US have reached a landmark bilateral deal that will ensure no tariffs on UK medicine exports being sold in the American market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise spending on medicines through the NHS. This pledge ensures that tariffs on these vital exports will be held at zero for a timeframe of 36 months.

This agreement is in response to earlier statements to significantly raise import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with potential rates mentioned reaching 100%.

"This arrangement with the UK bolsters the global environment for new treatments and establishes long-overdue fairness to transatlantic medicine commerce," a statement said.

Economic Impact

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the Britain's largest exports to the America, which is easily the biggest buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics show that in the one-year period leading up to the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value made up 17.4% of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee protects work, increases capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for medical research," a government official commented.

Specific British Pledges

The deal entails several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it considers new therapies to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates topped 20%.

Broader Context

This agreement follows a ongoing dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were intensified by arguments that US consumers were paying a premium for the identical medicines than patients in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while substantial funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
