Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
