The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
